"Why We Crave Horror Movies"

What is your greatest fear? Do you agree with Stephen King that "we're all mentally ill; those of use outside the asylums only hide it better--and maybe not that much better, after all?" (paragraph 1). Explain.

Please respond to another students' post after you post your own.

I apologize again for the late post (I teach in the afternoon and have limited internet access), so posting until the morning is ok.

Note: There will be a short quiz tomorrow on the "main idea" of the reading.

My greatest fear is a ghost. Every night I sleep, I would recall ghosts. I have never seen ghosts before, but my imagination would grow and grow. It is because there are lots of horror movies and TV programs in Japan. They invade my head so that I can't sleep.
I agree with the author about paragraph one. It says that everyone has some mental problems in him/her, though they are not in the asylum. In my opinion, it is because people can be excited from horror movies. People enjoy seeing people die in the movie and they grow their imagination in their head. If they really act what they are thinking, they could go to the jail.

Although, some people have experienced some unforgettable fear, however, I have a bad experience in one night in my military serving. I had eighteen soldiers, which I had to walk and arrange them in their sentry places, in different space of our garrison in the middle of the desert. That night, I was alone, and I was kind of scared by the sound of the wind and foxes.
In addition, I think we cannot say that all the people who talk to themselves or squinch their faces, are mentally ill. There are countless reasons for behaving like that and I cannot consider all of the people as a mentally ill. Furthermore, a person who has some mental problems cannot do some special jobs. For instance, how a person who has mental problem, cannot manage big company or design professional software. I think that people according to different situation have different reactions. I think it would be better if, the author had mentioned that there are two types of people. First those people who are healthy, and other who have some mental problems, and then he could divide the second group to different levels.

Dear Ami,
I think that movie are just movie, and there is no reason to scared of them. I believe that all of these senses and imaginations depend to our interpretation of these movies. If we scared of these movies, it’s because have some wrong understanding about them. However, I would scare of real ghost and not in the movie, because there are many ghost around us.

I agree with Ami...I scared of ghost too..so that's why I cannot sleep alone at night time..I always imagine ghost would appear in front of me just like horror movie!!Also..people enjoyed to see horror movie..but they will imagine about the body of the movie and feel scared..then..they will become mental disease people.
As a result..when I study in USA and living in the dorm..I won't see any horror movie anymore. It's because I don't want feel scared everynight~

Dear Friends,
If I want to be honest, believe me that my greatest fear is that, if I found a poisonous snake in my room or bed, that's all.
By the way, I have a lot of experiences for living alone, so I don't scare from that.

My greatest fear is death. I think almost of people are scare of death too. This is also the reason why I scare of watching horror movies. There are many horrible scenes in these films. I am actually afraid of watching Asian horror films because they are likely the real stories. I sometimes can not explain some phenomena so that I do not want to watch these films.
I completely agree with Stephen King that we have a little bit mental problems. We had better keep it inside. We all have two parts the body and the soul; they must not be separated. Sometimes we can not control ourselves so many people do something really bad such kill some bodies else or do some things weird. I agree with the author that “maybe not all that much better, after all.”

I have a fear of being home by myself, though I live in a very safe area, I am very anxious and nervous about staying at the house by myself, even briefly for my mom to run an errand when I was small. Now when I grow up and get married, that fear still exists. I always feel insecure and uncomfortable when I have to be at home alone. Actually, I feel better when I have people around all the time. To certain points, I agree with Stephan King that "we're all mentally ill; those of us outside the asylums only hide it better--and maybe not that much better, after all". I believe that everyone has it own fear and when it is the anxiety disorder that easily makes people suffer mental illness if they do not find ways to overcome it. Many people deny the early symptoms of mental illness. Maybe they do no know how to talk about it. Maybe they are afraid of prejudice, that is, mentally ill people must be in some sense inferior to those who are not. The way society view them differently makes them hide their illness, which may lead to worse conditions.

My greatest fear is ghost. The most horrible one is from Japan i have ever seen. i didn't even finish the movie when i saw it. But i still can remember some scenes in the movie. And it just like a shadow besides me.And i agree with the opinion of the writer. I think there is a place in our heart that even ourselves has never been there. And the horro movie is a kind of it.We even don't know how brave we are, because in the real life we have no chance to improve it. And this is a different way to certify. Also sometimes to see the horro movies just like to play roller coaster. We know it challenge our courage, but we still try.it sounds a little crazy. However it is true in the life.

I agree with Ami too. I still remember the horro film published by Japan and that is why I never see that kind of movie from Japan again.

My greatest fear is death same as Hai, but it is not only my death but also my family members’ death. Especially, my grand parents’ death is the most fearful, because they are old and weak. They brought up me until I was 5-year-old, so they’re really precious people for me. Then, before when I came to the U.S.A., I had visited my grand parents’ house. At that time, my grand mother said, “This meeting can be the last meeting with me.” When I heard this sentence, I was so sad and scared. I can’t imagine about my their death. Even though every people will die someday, I will be not able to accept my grand parents’ death. So, this is why death is my greatest fear.

I also agree with Ami. If I heard a ghost story, the story often comes to me. Also, it is hard to sleep at night because of the story.

My greatest fear is that there is no freedom, and no choice. When I was 9 years old, I saw the TV show that was consisted short story. I remembered one of them. This TV show is the most scared movie in my life. The story was about an accident. Some man had a car accident, he thought that he was dead, but when he woke up, he realized that he was still alive. Then, he tried to go outside, but he couldn’t because door was locked. He tried to open the door and windows, but it couldn’t be opened. Suddenly, one guy was appeared, and the guy told him that he should not go out anymore because he already died, and in the future, he had to stay at home evermore. At that time I was really scared. Maybe I couldn’t stand because I had no freedom and no choice.
I agree with author’s opinion that everyone has a mental problem. Maybe most people have their special afraid things such as death, small space, and alone. I am sure that there is no people who don’t have fear things. That is why I totally agree with author’s

I understand Hai’s fear things because I had some experience about death. 4 years ago, I have some problem the back of my neck. So I went to a small hospital, they said to me that it had a chance to be cancer. At that time, I was really afraid about death, and I realized that really I want to live, and I had a fear of death.

Huh, I'm afraid of many things, but my greatest fear is of heights. Don't ask me why and what do you feel that time when you are on top of mountain or you stand in balcony in the 30th floor. I can tell one thing, I feel dizziness and the rest of feeling I don’t know where is it.
I'm agree with the writer about people are all mentally ill. The nerves control the body of us to do some action or feel something. So, we start to think about what might will happen. Also, I'm agree with the author about hiding what we feel when we get scared. People try to be ok when they watch a scared movie or have a scared situation like if two friends walk in a dark street, but they can't hide all that just after if they see a cat walks to them.

My friend Mehdi
Actually when the author mentioned "we are all mentally ill". I think he doesn’t mean we are actually all mentally ill. I think he just used these words to explain that people when they are afraid, they just feel naturally. They start to think about the thing that scared them. If some one gets scared, he can't think about any thing just imagine many things can be thinking about death or life. These situations put people in hard time and if I can see someone at the moment, I can tell that situation drives that person to be crazy.

my greatest fear is ghost. in the Western, maybe people-especially scientists don't believe that there is ghost, but Asians believe that there is a nether world exists along our world. I have heard many ghost stories from a child, and some one told me that they had seen the ghost!. Although i have never met any ghost, i am always afraid when i am alone in the dark. the cold wind in the dark and the silent sight terrify me.
I agree with the author that we're all mentally ill. we can control the fear, and keep it inside. Some one do crazy things because they have faced a lot of tragedy or seen horror films and they are obsessed.

dear Mehdi,
i don't agree with you about "...I think it would be better if, the author had mentioned that there are two types of people. First those people who are healthy, and other who have some mental problems, and then he could divide the second group to different levels."
Actually, all of us have at least to be afraid. for example, this people is afraid of blood, another one isn't afraid of blood but snake makes him scare. so we are just in the same type.

Even though i have never seen ghosts before, i know existence of ghosts through watching movies or heard from people who can see some ghost. Whenever i heard about that from person, i cannot sleep at late night. At that time, i had insomnia. As author said, almost all people have mentally disease. It is natural phenomenon.
Some people enjoy that kind of story. Especially, in summer season, many people like this. It makes people goose bumps on their skin. It means we have chemical reaction in our body. So, in summer season, many people enjoy whatching or hearing story about ghost.
My geatest fear is death of my family. Same with April. After coming here, i start feeling that because i cannot live together right now. So, i am scared we are not together. If i have a fatal disease, i go to the Korea back as soon as possibe to meet my family for my last life.
