I think that songs being more introspect, profound would be more popular when the authors wrote this article because this article was written while people were serious. As the authors cited, matured songs would be more popular in trouble times.
The authors believe that people love more genuine music when something comes to be austere. Many papers support the belief, including the one Pettijohn and University of Georgia professor Abraham Tesser presented.
I think that people need someone whom they can trust in, and who gives them courage in times of trouble. They would do now that they could feel insecure. However, when everything goes well, people just want to be delighted. Anything that can give them fun would be popular; that's why people like sexual stuff in this very moment because sexuality makes people happy easily. If you don't have money and are literally starving, who would care of provocative stuffs?
And, Britney Spears was so tarted up; she played her Joker, which is sex card, too much. I don't think that she's going to increase again. But, the thing is, the more she goes down, the more she tarts herself up. That makes her career worse. Besides, I don't think she has had her music style. She was just a dancer instead of a singer.
It might be harsh for her to hear about herself, but I really think so.

When the author wrote this article, people regarded lyrics as more important a thing than sexuality. In addition, people preferred the songs that have spirit and reflect personality. The author thinks that this is because the time became darker after September 11, and people just did not feel like listening to sexy songs. Therefore, you can see that people's preferences would be affected by the social and economic environment. People favor a powerful, cheerful and calm character when the time is dark, but people favor just fun a character when the time is bright. On the other hand, there is an artist who did not notice the change. Her name is Britney Spears. Because she has played the "sex card," her sales has declined obviously. When she was more wholesome, she could have been on the top of the charts for a long period. I wish she would come back to the good old days because I was a huge fan of her.

I think Sam gets the point of this article.

When this article published, people were popular with lyrics more than others. Moreover, this was economic crisis, especially, the event of September 11, people were in trouble time so they prefer to listen the authentic and alluring music, they did not focused on dancing and body.
In this reading text, the authors believed lyrics music were more popular with people because in the time of trouble, people felt more comfortable with mellow and introspective songs.
Furthermore, social and economic conditions influenced human preferences, when people were in happy time, that's means they have stable jobs and earned money, they tend to love funny things, they have more options to prefer and easy for them to achieved, sometimes, they love to become different with other people.
And, Britney Spear was a pop star with the biggest single album "Baby One More Time"on the top of chart for a long time but she has lost her image by playing "sex card". And it's not surprised when her popularity has gone down and that's why the latest album was posted so-so sales.

i think because the economy is declining,,so author people prefer have a mature mind,,body and personality characteristics...also,,audiences are like listening to lyrics more than dancing and having fun..
In addition,,Pettijohn and University of Georgi professor Abraham Tesser present a paper that the social and economic enviornment affects human preference.
Actually...people tend to favor the fun preson if the times are good!
However, after Septmber11,US .audience became more mature, introspective approach because their confusion and the sense has been changed..
Morever, because of Britney Spears ,the pop star, who like played the "sex card", and her lastest album cannot get a good selling...may be the "sex card"has a big bad influence to her!!

At the time when this article was published, songs which has content reflects the situation of society and economy were popular. The author believe so because the bad result of turnover of music industry and the researches of social psychologists showed that the linking of audiences has changed. In fact, after the incident september 11, 2001 the world economy has gone down , so there is a change in society and people thinking. sexuality or something have fun haven't affected listeners . The song with beautiful lyric about life is the thing which audiences need.
according to the researchers from American college and university, people preferences depend on each condition. when we have fun and big, no problem in work or living, we like something fun . when we get trouble in our life , such as sadness or bad income, we like something small .
Britney spears is pop star who has played the "sex card" most often . As i know , she has followed the sexual image from the beginning of her career until now. firstly, with youthful image, Britney's singles stood on the top of charts frequently, such as baby one more time and i'm slave for u . however , she has not changed her image while audience' s music taste has been different and her body is worse than she was young. So that's why her newest album has only so-so sales.

I think that everybody in this class believes Britney is going down. I don't know why she kissed Madonna; she is not even a lesbian. She might just want to get attention.

I would never agree with what Pink said. People might sell their precious property, but not themselves. I wouldn't think that people could live without their self-esteem or something related to themselves.

I think that sexuality is the easiest property that people can sell. People who sell that might be too lazy to work hard.

I don't agree with Sam the point " I think that sexuality is the easiest property that people can sell. People who sell that might be too lazy to work hard."
maybe he misunderstands about sexuality in this situation. Singers, especially famous singers like Britney Spears and Madonna, do be not lazy . They worked so hard to get the glory. In this case, author just mentions that these singers have gotten wrong marketing method.

I agree with the writer that as long as sex temptation economy and society have strong influence on the music taste of people and incredible impact on their belief.

At the first, as Dr Pettijohn has mentioned, during some regretful situation, people have tendency to listen to some specific music that have strong expression. According to the his research, during dangerous incident and risky condition like a terrorist attack, or even in sluggish circumstance, viewer prefer to listen to or watch music that they can improve their aplomb. In this way singer can demonstrates people’s feeling about the situation and people want to represent themselves powerful as they had been before that condition. However in regular circumstance they wish listen to pleasurable songs, which can help them to have fun.

In addition, sex appealing can be another criterion that can absorbs too many people. I think sex appealing has different aspect compare to economy or society condition and a few people can resist for it. I believe in the sex desiring the important factors are just individual measures and although, it still can be good way for making good profit, however it going to decrease. If I want to name one of the most famous artists, definitely I will say Spears, who has played sex card and had been make huge profit during recession.
finally, I think smooth and mature music were popular when this article was published, because after September 11, people were looking for changing their sense about that crash and they prefer to listen to some thoughtful song instead of sexy music.

mehdi said...

As Sam said: "people need someone whom they can trust in, and who gives them courage in times of trouble"
I think it's a good point and it represents people's expectation of their favorite singer or music.

mehdi said...

Dear vivian and le,
I'm not agree with your comment, because when this article was published it was after September 11 and people had experienced regretful
situation and they need to listen to some music which could change their feel.

Sam Song said...

I think dat can be right. What I tried to say is selling sex is not that hard compared to making a profound song. I know that they work hard, but their works are easier than other song writhers'.

Dat in a way has a point because tarted singers like Britney sell their sexuality, but other singers sell their emotion or knowledge.

And then, I want to ask you guys of what makes the art better, if pop songs are considered to be a sort of art? (In my opinion, artists have selled their talent.) I think it might be better if you sell your creativity than yourselves?

Anyways, they all sell something.;)

mehdi said...

Dear Sam,
That's good question,
I think that Pop it self can be kind of art but without sex appealing, because in my opinion sex can not be an Art. If we want to name sex an art so we will have too many artist who don't know any thing about the art.

kstella said...

Almost artist who works in entertament or other place, they express their value or thinking, something like that and reflect society. This is a kind of their emotion expression. But, problem is to be sensitive thing we feel. As time does by, many people want to get more sensitive things like sex and some artist make some sensitive things to sell and earn a lot of money. We can heard these kinds of songs easily. I think it is common theseadays.
When i listen to music, touch my body, sung by Mariah Carey, i thought it is very sensitive. But, I think it is a part of art. If we think something is obscenity, it is to be obscenity. But, if we think it is art, it is to be art.

In the article it infers that lyric is a popular when the article is published, because at the different times this kind of music can somehow influence the sales.

“In times of trouble, strong, stable, supportive people are favored” ,“when times are good, we tend to favor the fun person” sometimes individuals prefer smaller eyes, thinner checks and larger chins in bad times, and women with large eyes, fuller cheeks and smaller chins in good time. Also US is always going back and forth between their puritan values and their need for indulgences. Time changed the favor of the audience changed.

Spears has played the sex card most often and also this made most blatantly in the face of declining the sales. The sex card made her single in the top spot a long time in singles chart.

When this article was published, audiences are focused on content and story line of lyrics. For example, change of sales of Spears’ albums is good example of method that shows people’s recognition.
As social and economic conditions are threatening and pessimistic, people want something more mature facial, body, and personality characteristics.
Also, pushing artists “tart it up” doesn’t apply to the publics any more.
As previously stated, "... Baby One More Time," which is Spears’ the most successful album made her becomes a super star. However, after she played the “sex card” more often, she faced the declining sales apparently.

When this article was published, people love listening to genuine music which is focusing on content and story line than dancing or having fun. The authors believe that because the amount of mediocre album sales were decreasing quickly. Thus, the authors indicated that people love traditional valueable music. Especially, when social and economisc times was not so good.

When this article was published, people would like to listen to lyrics more than dance and body because in this article, the author said that female artists who were famous in the radio step into the nation’s post- September 11 soul-searching and Ron Vos said people concentrated content and story line, not dancing and having fun, and they wanted that the artist reflected their feeling. When author wrote this article, people had a hard time. According to article, when people are in trouble, people like stable more than fun. It means when it was easy time for people, they can accept ‘sex card’. That’s why I can guess that people were in trouble at that time. Usually Spears used ‘Sex Card’. Even though her strategy was good, now a days, the society does not like this kind of appeal, so people’s reaction about her album was not good, and this album sold a little.

everyone said social condition affects our preference, and author said that when people were in trouble, people liked stable, strong, and supportive person. however, in my country, there are lots of successful female pop singers which have a 'sex card'. i think my country's economic and others condition is not good, but this kind of musician is still popular.

Actually, the kind of songs which was popular is focus on sexuality, pay attention for body with bypassing the lyrics of songs.

In this article, the authors believe that all audiences want to listen to lyrics, not dancing and moving body. When we talk about audiences, we know they want from the singer to reflect what he feels when he sings a song. Also, the meaning of the lyrics which might is story or experience.

According to the article, social and economic condition can affect what people prefer.
In the hard times and that have a lot of struggle, people prefer mature facial, body, such as songs have more allure for audiences. People try to forget their problems and how they face the troubles by favoring the sexy songs, more dancing and have fun. Also, they prefer a special kind of woman who has small eyes, thin cheeks and large chins. On the other hand, when they have a good time, they prefer more comedy and laughing. And they like to listen to meaning of lyrics. The special kind of women who preferred for people in the good time is who has large eyes, full cheeks, and small chins.

The author mentioned Britney Spears has played the sex card. She has done that because she wanted to face the declining sales and might she thought it is a good solution to struggle for protect and save her name. she doesn’t her music passes away. But she choose the wrong way for that. I have some reasons for that. First, all people knew Spears from her first album" … Baby One More Time," and that album got a big fame. When she wanted to change the style of her songs to play on sex card, people don’t used to watch Spears in a new look. So, she got declining in her sales. It's hard to change your work' style if people used to see you in another style or look, especially, if that person is a famous.

I don’t agree with ami, and le about when the author wrote this article people were popular with lyrics more than others because the kind of songs were about sexuality and show body without caring for lyrics. So, that is why the author wrote this article to explain what people want in that period.

Social and economic condition affects our favourite sometimes. People do not want to watch repetitive igmages. In this case, Britney was really wrong when she played the "sex card". People expect something new from her but she did not regconize. Sex is attractive but it does not work somtime. People, when they have trouble, want to listen to genuine music than buy mediocre albums.

When this article was published the most popular songs are related to sex, libido, however some of those is genuine but the others is so violent. The authors Keith Girard and Liz Skinner show Britney Spear and Pink as good examples about power of sex to today's music. Looking back the background of some pop star "Christina vamps like a burlesque stripper, Briney's gone from school girl to slut and Pink is a punk" but they all are the most famous stars that means sex attract people. In the bad time, people need sex as good solution to feel better. That's why the market increases demand. Our preferences were affect by social and economic factors that depend on public's need. In the stable , strong social , the mellow soulful lyrics toward traditional values are in need, and against. Spear has played the "sex card" most often but her success is decreasing by the time despite of massive advertiment.

Olivia says:

Sex is really an important influence on people to choose kind or music. The article says that depends on the social and economic level our preferences, on other hands, says that in trouble times people need to listen spirit lyrics, and in good times they prefer the opposite.

The advertisement is so powerful to create models of life on people, but they have to be really careful because the audience preferences can vary. Each sociaty (past and present) has/had their own beliefs so that´s mean for some of them sexuality is/was a strong stuff and other not.

In my opinion music with sexuality content always is goiong to sell in some times more than others. Actually if you want to become an artist has to be sexy, beautiful/handsome, atractive, and the last; good voice because most of the people likes to see them.
